Hey Martin,
Macro photography is a very technical and comlicated subject, so there's a limit t what I can explain here. However I'll try to answer your questions.
This shot was made very early on a clold morning, meaning the insects are absolutely catatonic, and can be gently manipulated to stand wherever you want them.
This fly stood there for about an hour, so I had no problem doing as many pics as I wanted, no need to hurry. I also have a close portrait of it (can be seen on my website: www.erezmarom.com). I use focus-shift rather than a rail for better stability. Later I join the images using software.
