John James Audubon painted birds in vivid color to emphasize their behavior, physical characteristics, and field marks. Often typical habitat was included. Audubon’s renderings were not ‘realistic’ nature photographs. For this challenge you should emulate Audubon and submit photos of one or several birds in a group that emphasize and even exaggerate their color and markings. See additional rules and examples below. Judges should have Audubon's folios in mind while evaluating the entries.

No multiple images or composites.

Capture date rules:

No restrictions.

Additional rules:

Background must be neutral or extreme bokeh. See examples.
Foreground can include minimum material showing habitat. See examples.
The bird’s name and location must be included in the title or comments.
No watermarks, borders, or frames.
Entries that violate the above rules will be disqualified.
If I miss something, and you see an entry that you feel does not qualify, use the complaint button and state your case, but do so well before the submission deadline ends. No complaints after that date will be considered.

1000 ISLANDS, PILEATED WOODPECKER

The Pileated Woodpecker is Canada's largest and most beautiful (IMO). This one has just extracted a small insect from under the bark of an old tree stump.

Notes:	Taken on a heavily overcast day, this photo showed a white background as the file was brightened. Some sharpening and saturation added to help with the Audubon "look".

You weren't the only one! I was quite looking forward to mocking up a plate.

I said the same thing to the host on the thread that he opened, but obviously it was too late.

I appreciate the comment. I really wanted to add a border and the text that Audubon would have used, but it wasn't allowed.

imo, this shot does emulate Audunon's style. When I first saw it I thought I was looking at a Audubon print.
