Travel Photo (captions required)

Just an outstanding shot of a beautiful little girl. I really loved the shot. I don't know who the 5 morons were that gave it a .5 but they should be baned from voting. This shot is as good as many I've seen on Time or Newsweek.

Great work.

One negative comment however. Since your on DPR you should have said "Made it back alive (just)" :-)

The light, the tones, the expression of the girl, the message...excellent photo!!!

That last sentence is an excellent point jbf, and one I think of often.
I was there as a visitor. Passing through, just looking. But to actually live there, my god. If you are in or were born in a western nation, consider that your first win of the lottery ...and I know, not everything is good even than, but at least you have some sort of chance.

When I say "made it back alive ...barely" - I made it back, but not without the help of rooftop snipers, mercs "ghosting' me in an SUV down the street, and especially from the small army at, and the fortress called, the Serena. Good drivers, helpful Afghans and alot of really good luck.

Great story and great photograph. I was just reading a thread on another photography website, the subject of which was Walker Evans and his attitude toward photography. One quote from that thread was, "...true lyricism enters spontaneously without notice, almost never when called - and is often discovered after the fact, as an unexpected but welcome guest." I'm still trying to digest that whole discussion, but I'm guessing this photo is a good example of what they were talking about. I noticed you added a note: "Made it back alive ...barely." I can't help but think, "Made it back alive ...barely _from her home_."

I wanted to see this shot win.. and it did ! congrats !!
