The dormant volcano Mauna Kea (Hawai‘ian for “white mountain”) on the Big Island of Hawai‘i gets its name from the winter snow cover at the 13,803-foot summit. This view is looking northwest past the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, toward 10,023-foot high dormant volcano Haleakalā (Hawai‘ian for "house of the sun") on the island of Maui, with the Pacific Ocean in the distance. Although at 19°49′14.39″N latitude, the sub-freezing temperature was decidedly non-tropical on this September day.
