Your text is very dramatic, and sound a bit like a sales pitch, but please read about what you're writing.

You say "they will measure every inch of hundreds miles from their home village to Budala Palace, Lhasa". Ok, I've got a tear in my eye, nut It's not Budala, it's Pothala.

You also say "just like a Musllin must visit Jerusalem at least once in their lifetime."

Why the hell should a muslim go to Jerusalem? They go to Mecca.

Your title is funny - /Disillusionment does make for good photographs/ - but still so sad, as I agree with what you say about the potential if redirected. I don't think their teachers and leaders would have any sort of power trip. I'm sure they believe in what they are teaching just as much as who they are teaching it to. But anyhow, I don't know.. what can be done, but to have some consolation that, at least they are happy in their beliefs, and not bombing anyone. But still, seeing how these beliefs are perpetuated onto children, it's still sad.

Yes, looking into their eyes I do feel sorry for these fellows. Not for the physical pain that I'm sure they feel during their "quest", but for what other human potential they might have had if that fervor were redirected, say, into creating joy for themselves and helping others. You have to wonder if the instigating religious figure gets some kind of "power trip" out of talking people into these actions.

Haha! Nice angle of view. You are quite right. I never looked at it that way. I'm not much of a sport follower myself, but have game to a _handful_ of games. Fun enough I guess. It's cool to poke fun at friends and acquaintances I guess about their (hopefully losing) team, and spend time with them. That will certainly be one of many positive aspects: socializing. Anyhow, nice angle.

Let's face it, EVERY religion comes down to a crazy belief. ... and you don't even have to look to religion to find fanatics. There are people who pay /serious/ money to watch millionaires play games. :| They are /such/ fanatics that they pay even /more/ money to dress in the same shirts as those millionaires. Some of them even follow those millionaires to other cities just so they can watch them play their games somewhere else. I dunno, I think it's more interesting to watch people crawl around a mountain ... for free.

These young men are obviosly fanatics -their lives are being ruined by thse belifs and actions - surely there is a bettre way to spend waht time we have on this planet than doing this - thankfully apparenly [ from one of quotes ] they are inward looking - but IMO this verges on Insanity .

I think, before we strangers entered their region, they used to support / rely on each other. They just dedicated themselves and there are no 'pay-gain' values.

To those who feel disturbing or sorry: it is not necessary. It's a routine activitiy for Tebitan, just like a Musllin must visit Jerusalem at least once in their lifetime. Tibetans usually fall over themselves in doing this repeatly as soon as they got some time, either on road or on tample square. 100,000 times of 'long kowtow', done in a month or 2, would be no suprising for a faithful Tebitan. By the way, they should accomplish the travel of pilgrimage by spending no money, regardless they are rich or poor. They will fully rely on alms for live through out the journey. So please hand out if you meet them.

While this is a fine photo Reprentation - I find it disturbing - how did these young men come to such a state of belief in waht IMO is absurd - that they would act thus . It scares me a bit- sorry it scares me a lot - as does my own entry [ 31 ?]

Congratulations on this win, this should be in National Geographic photos... I was so sure this was the run away winner.
