Airplanes in Flight

I agree. It's a spectacular photo, but if I was blind flying a DC2 in cloud at that bank angle, I'd most likely be out of control. Something's not quite right here IMO, but as a photo, it looks pretty good.

I think it's called 'artistic licence'. Perfect acceptable in this type of image, IMHO.

The shot is great... but what really sets it apart is not only how the plane breaks through the clouds... but how there is a light shooting out of the nose of the plane...

This aircraft is 1 of the 2 remaining flying DC-2, owned by the Aviodrome in Lelystad, the Netherlands. This former United States Navy aircraft is painted in the Uiver's KLM colour scheme and is sometimes seen on airshows in Europe. It is registered as NC39165 since 1945, though is now also wearing PH-AJU as a fictional registration to match that of the historic Uiver aircraft.

On the fuselage you can read "ROYAL DUTCH AIRLINES", however mirrored.

I checked on the internet and the aircraft was indeed present on the Airpower 09 show.

So for me this superb picture is (although it seems heavily post processed) for real.

This image is a beautiful work of art, but it it just does not look real to me. As a former pilot I know
1) those white topped clouds are sunlight bright. There is no way the nose light cone would be visible in that environment.
2) the bank angle is very "non-standard"-- way too steep for IFR conditions. Looks more like an out of control situation.

3) The camera plane would seem to be in a very bad position--there is a lot of mid-air collision potential in that setup.

Yes, a stunning picture, but the photoshop work is just too unbelievable for me.

This is chock full of awesome. The clouds, the banking of the plane, the emergence from the cloud, the tones you achieved in your processing. Goodness, there is so much to like in this shot. To me this is an absolute winner. Frame and hang in your home...it deserves that honor.
