Edinburgh's old and new towns are part of the Unesco heritage, for more info please see whc.unesco.org/en/list/728 . Edinburgh was known as 'Athens of the North', and to commemorate its dead in the Napoleonic wars the City Fathers decided to build a copy of the Parthenon. The work started in 1826. Typical for Scottish building projects, schedule and budget went badly wrong, with only the facade completed. Today it is used as the scene for many festivals, the largest Beltane, www.beltane.org.
