These gnarled roots were clinging to the edge of the Ubehebe crater in Death Valley - the hottest and driest of national parks in the United States. This crater goes to a depth of 777 feet against a backdrop of hills that can be seen just above the lip of the far edge of the crater. A stark reminder of the dangers hidden in this grand landscape.
