Sports Photography Challenge finished on Thursday, 09 Jun 2011 Submit a photograph of athletes in action: running, jumping, competing, cycling, hitting a ball, shooting a goal, taking aim, what have you. -- Location is the most important consideration: get as close to the action as is prudent, and use a zoom lens to get even closer. You want to freeze the action, but you may want not freeze it too much, so as to imply motion. You may get better results if you photograph a sport you are very familiar with. -- Be aware that flash use is often forbidden in sporting events, so make the most of your camera settings. Be sure your subject is in focus; this can be very hard to do right even with autofocus.

Newspaper editorial: Poverty Challenge finished on Wednesday, 08 Jun 2011 The client is a Western newspaper doing a feature on poverty. They seek a suitable B&W image to illustrate the story. Since the article is not about third-world poverty, they do not want images of mud huts, hand plowing, aid packages, etc., but of "civilized" poverty. The image must be bold and grab the attention of the readers, drawing them to the story. People in the image must not be recognizable.
