Winner: Potted Plant
Billboard: Springing to life Challenge finished on Wednesday, 18 May 2011 The client is a new heath product manufacturer looking to improve their brand image with a "growth" message. They seek an image suitable for a billboard (16:9). The image must be of a plant springing up from the soil. The soil can be a garden or a potting bed. The plant must be on the far right or far left side of the image to make room for text. At least half the image must be dark or light enough to allow a text overlay (suitable "white space"). This can be achieved in-camera or through photo editing. There must be no additional elements that distract from the subject (that means that such elements are acceptable so long as they're not distracting).

Vernacular Photography and the Snapshot Aesthetic Challenge finished on Tuesday, 17 May 2011 The greatest and most praised photograph hanging on a museum gallery wall is of trivial importance compared to your snapshot of a loved one. Vernacular photography is the photography of everyday life: family, friends, home, and familiar places. --- According to the Austrian art theorist Joseph August Lux, personal photography provides stability against the ebb and flow of modernity. Submit photos you took during an especially joyous time of your life, while you were with loved ones. --- The main question is will *other people* judge your photograph highly, will they consider it art? --- Closely related to vernacular photography is the "snapshot aesthetic", where professional photographers copy the often crude technique and poor image quality of vernacular photographs. The snapshot aesthetic is perhaps opposed in intent from the vernacular, so this ought to be an interesting competition.
