Make It Square
Challenge finished on Monday, 03 Aug 2009
For this challenge, photograph a person, pet, portrait, plant, object, or pattern, and fit it expertly into a square format. A single subject should dominate the frame. Please read the following to fully understand the nature of the challenge. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The aesthetic of the square format in photography is regularly debated, although important photographers like Richard Avedon, Robert Doisneau, and Irving Penn have used it with great success. Those of us who learned photography using square format cameras (Rollei, Hasselblad) were taught to compose in the viewfinder either vertically or horizontally in the expectation that our prints and enlargements would be in the preferred rectangular format. Today, with few digital cameras offering a square format option, the problem is to compose in a rectangular frame with the expectation of cropping to a square.
