Viet Nam: Anything other than portraits Challenge finished on Thursday, 31 Jan 2013 Viet Nam has everything: Spectacular mountainous landscapes, idyllic beaches, fascinating temples. This challenge is for everything related to Viet Nam other than portraits. Those will be DQ'd. But everything else is fair game. If you had only one image to express what VN means to a viewer, what would you show us? It is just fine to have one or more people in your photo. No person in the image should take up more than 5% of the frame. I'll try to monitor this challenge closely and will let entrants know if I think there is a problem--and I'll do this in a timely fashion, so that people will have plenty of time to re-submit new images if necessary. Please, no images that you've already used in prior challenges . . . let's see something fresh and new from you. (I will likely depend on help from other challenge participants in tracking down violators. So, images that are repeats could be DQ'd at any time . .. even after the challenge ends!) Thanks in advance for this. :-)
Winner: Survival of the fittest - Puffin bringing home the fish supper
Survival Of The Fittest Challenge finished on Thursday, 31 Jan 2013 The living have to eat to go on living. That single aspect is the most powerful motivation - equally to humans and to other beings. However, while we humans apparently see no end in complicating the issue, the animals use the most direct way to achieve the same goal. Whatever we call it, the ultimate truth remains: there is no life without death. Show us an animal with the prey it has caught.
Winner: a yosemite sunrise
Classic HDR Landscape Challenge finished on Wednesday, 30 Jan 2013 This is the most common use of HDR. Can you take advantage of multiple exposures to create a colorful landscape with a wide dynamic range? Use your photography and editing skills to create a landscape that has a a classic HDR look, specifically it should have a high dynamic range and NO areas of unnecessarily blown highlights or blackened shadows. Use of multiple exposure is not 100% necessary when shooting in RAW with certain cameras; you can get very good dynamic range if you know what you're doing.
