Tribute to: W. Eugene Smith Challenge finished on Sunday, 08 Nov 2009 W. Eugene Smith was noted for his ability to tell stories through a series of photographs. According to many photography historians, he is arguably the originator of the "photographic essay". He was certainly a master of that genre as seen in his collections such as "Country Doctor" and "Minamata" He found ways of protraying the nobility of people regardless of the circumstances. His images are very poetic, and in some cases hardly seem like photojournalism. Show us your images which evoke the style of W. Eugene Smith

Dramatic Light: Hand Coloring Challenge finished on Saturday, 07 Nov 2009 A hundred years ago, to create a color photograph required painting a black and white print by hand. At the turn of the century, a few practitioners still remained, carrying out their arcane art in a world overrun with color film. While hand coloring prints is practically a lost art today, you can achieve a similar effect digitally ... without having to resort to special filters and plug-ins. With a B&W image in your editing software, create one or more transparent layers. Apply selective color on the layer. Adjust the layer blends to achieve the desired look. Submit your best "hand colored" image. Refer to the sample image and check out the additional rules.

Leaves Challenge finished on Thursday, 05 Nov 2009 Pictures where leaves are the object of interest. We see many pictures this time of year where forests seem ablaze with color from the leaves of trees such as maples, but the object of the images is the forest rather than the leaves. Here the subject is the leaf itself or the leaves. Voting should be biased toward the least PP and the most revelation of the spirit of a leaf.

Volcanoes Challenge finished on Thursday, 05 Nov 2009 Volcanoes are spectacular examples of how Earth renews itself in dramatic fashion. In this Challenge, you should submit a photograph of a volcano - either active, dormant or extinct - that best portrays the mood of the mountain. Photographers are asked to keep to the theme of this series by submitting images to illustrate the art inherent in nature using minimal post-capture processing to enhance what is already there.
