"Never was so much owed by so many to so few" - Winston Churchill. Upload a picture related to the famous Battle of Britain - the first major campaign to be fought entirely by air forces in 1940. Both sides, British and German can be represented: people, aircraft, places, memorials.

Processing rules:

Preferably just basic post processing: crop, brightness, contrast, saturation, white balance.
HDR is admitted.

Capture date rules:

No restrictions.

Additional rules:

No composite images.
Provide a title and a short description, including the type of the aircraft and/or the name of the place where the picture was taken.
Images with full EXIF.
No old pictures / negative scans - only images taken with digital cameras.
Upload only pictures that you have taken.

All the pics were excellent although Private Custard was right. The winning photo is of a Hurricane Mk XII manufactured in Canada in 1942 and appears it never left Canada while it was in service. It was later restored to resemble a MKIIa and is now stored in England.

80 hp LeRhone rotary... Yeovilton's Sopwith Pup? I think it flew in the earlier war. Great photo though.

My pic was disqualified for being a later mk Spit than what they had in the B.O.B as it had a four blade prop. Which is fair enough...

But how come there are 3 other pics in here that also feature later spits with 4 bladed props that weren't disqualified.
Seems a bit unfair?

All the pics that didn't comply with the rules were disqualified (23 in total) - if you see any other left please let me know.

Because after 72-73 years there are so few remnants of the battle left, this is a difficult challenge. If I could post more than one image, I would post the companion to my spitfire pic, a Junkers JU-87 Stuka. It is one of only two intact Stukas left in existence. They fought in the early part of the Battle but had to be withdrawn due to heavy casualties. A few years back it was taken down from the Museum of Science and Industry and restored by the EAA folks in Oshkosh, Wi. I believe there were 6,500 Stukas built and its hard to believe only two intact remain!

I am sorry to say that the Japanese "Kate did not participate in the Battle of Britain nor the Avro Lancaster. The Lancaster did not become operational until 1942.

Most of the non-museum Spitfires are later (post-BoB) versions too, with the most recent being not only a Mk.IX (1944), but a two-seat trainer too (I.D. plate in the cockpit is a giveaway!). Same goes for the hurricane!

People might think we're being fussy, but rules are rules!

I'm just waiting to see a winning photo with no Battle of Britain in it. I'll laugh my ass off!!

Just for information the Focke Wulf fw 190 never fought in the Battle of Britain and wasn't operational until August, 1941, ten months after the battle ended. I have no problems with it remaining in the challenge because I like to see it. Just so we get the facts right. The most numerous fighters were the Hurricane and the Bf-109. The Spitfire became the most famous, however the Hurricane was the backbone of the RAF at that time.

Battle of Britain ≠ WW2.

The rule is in the title. I've had shots removed on technicalities in the past. This is no different. If WW2 was the subject, it'd be in the title!

The rules are very clear. I cannot accept any aircraft picture just for the simple reason that is an aircraft that was flying somewhere in the world during that period. Your Fi-156 image would have been welcome two weeks ago, in the "Oldies but Goldies" challenge.

Actually the rules state "a picture RELATED" to the actual Battle of Britain" - so that leaves quite a bit of wriggle room. I would have thought that a picture of production aircraft after the BoB ended but of the same generic type would fit the criterion of being "related" to the BoB. I think the rules should have stated clearly that submissions are restricted specifically to aircraft were extant during the few months of the BOB. That leaves very few options for participants other than pictures taken in museums.

In the Battle of Britain ALL the bombers were German in origin. Lancasters
(i) were British and (ii) did not even exist in prototype form in 1940. Two of these submissions are imperfectly related to that battle.

As a small child I saw plenty of RAF and USAAF bomber formations in the sky above my home. The sound was amazing - trees and people swayed, and window panes rattled. God knows what it was like at the other end, Alistair.

If you're talking about the two Lancaster shots, one of them has a BoB veteran flying next to it, which, judging by a lot of the shots we're likely to see in this challenge, is perfectly acceptable!

Just as a heads-up, keep an eye on the tail numbers of any Spitfire in-flight entries.

P7350 is the only airworthy Spitfire with BoB service under its belt, and is currently one of six Spitfires used by the BoB Memorial Flight, based at Conningsby.

Depends how strict you plan on being!
