Shoot whatever you like, but it must be a one hour exposure. I'll give a 3 minute cushion for those without the necessary gear to get the timing precise.

Any chance of an extension time wise on this one? It,s rather time consuming only being able to shoot 2 or 3 shots a night, and another few days would be great to experiment, and we have only 6 entries so far.

question to a knowledged guy - I haven't yet tried and I fear my time budget is running low...
When I tell the camera to substract a black picture it starts another picture same duration with closed shutter.
With a duration this long - will it get better or worse?

better cameras allow you to take also a second photo with closed shutter - the black picture. This is considered to represent the current deviation of the sensor (given temperature etc).
This black picture is substracted pixel-wise from the 'target' photo theoretically eliminating systematic deviations.
Of course there is a difference between theory and reality...

By the way: I tried yesterday and found out I cannot take a 1 hour exposure outside the house - I get pure white with a little noise since stray light of the city is much too high.
Same is true with normal rooms in my house since I took care to have a window in each and any room.
Remains the toilet which is (a) a bit cramped and (b) nothing I would want to post here...
Anyway: this would have meant that I would have to light-paint which is allowed by the host but feels like cheating for me.
PS: the one noise-free shot is a cheat in my eyes.

First, I tried a one hour exposure outside in my light polluted neighborhood and didn't end up white at all. YMMV, depending on where you live. I attempted light painting but the paint was extremely dull, due to the exposure time, but I didn't end up with a blown out shot. Definitely some noise, though. Could've cleaned that up in post.

Secondly, which one are you talking about? Both the clock and the ocean shot are pretty crisp. I can only assume you're referring to the clock. He may have lit the shot and capped the lens for the remainder of the exposure. Not exactly what I was hoping for with this challenge, but it's still within the rules, I suppose.

I guess this long duration is a killer in nowadays sensors - unless they are cooled with fluid nitrogen or even cooler...
I tried to shoot fireworks and the remaining light of the city was sufficient to produce light(!) grey within 30s so I cancelled even trying 100 times as long.
On the other side I decided to try something in the minutes range next summer when the nights aren't that cold any more.

I have tried first with my A700 - the result was unacceptable, with terible noise and violet/pink overcast. The 5N was very good, as you see it above, with well distanced specks of noise. Set at Long Exposure NR.

Where did you hear that long exposure photography overheats sensors? LE Photography is pretty commonplace. If you're blowing out your images after 30 seconds, bring it down to minimum ISO and min aperture (higher F-stop number). a 60 minute exposure won't work in bright environments, though.

It's not about heat, it's about picture noise. Most of this noise is electrical noise influencing the pixels.
I have a light painting in my gallery where the background is an (unlighted) white wall. Duration is a few seconds but some pixels of the background are not pitch black (ok, it was not pitch black - although it was night).
All professional astronomy sensors are cooled by liquid nitrogen, some even with liquid helium. I think you can guess why...

JAYSUN: I PROTEST!

You have DQd that truly beautiful picture of the Orion in the sky with the ruins.

WHY? Because it is stacked? I wish to remind you that Photography is about capturing light, not about how many times the shutter is being actuated. The time was close to the required one, and you should even appreciate the technical feat of the author.

I beseech you to reconsider and reinstate that pic.

I would vote 5 stars for it, although I have my own pic displayed here as well..

As I stated, the rules are perfectly clear. A single, one-hour exposure. I haven't hosted a challenge in a while. I started this one because I was curious to see what different shots people could come with when they're required to leave the shutter open for an hour. In this case, stacking doesn't qualify. If I allowed stacking, it negates the entire reason for the challenge.

JAYSUN: you are saying that DPR members complain when Exif is unavailable.

Taking my photo as an example I will argue that there's little useful in Exif to takes his/her own pics.

The Shutter speed is 3600 sec, a given. One may consider 100ASA a given as well for better resolution, and low available light.

One sets the aperture between f/16 to f/32, and start adjusting the LIGHTING until one gets a satisfactory reading on a lightmeter (1hour/f/16-32).
The LIGHT- its direction, color, intensity - this is the big unknown and deciding factor that just looking at Exif teaches one zilch. One has to WORK on it.

BTW it does not matter if the camera is film or digital. One has to set the same ISO, Speed, Aperture values, although for film one has to account for its characteristics at long exposures.

Instead of looking at Exif, time is better spent looking and learning from paintings, drawings and photos by the masters. There's more in a pic than just technical data.

I assume you're not a challenge host. I've been doing this for a little while now. When you create a challenge with specific technical requirement, such as the one in this challenge, you will always (without exception) run into much of the following:

1) Entrants using photos that obviously don't fall within the guidelines. Most of the time, it's obvious these people knew they were violating the rules because they never protest when you disqualify them.
2) All of the other entrants will contact me to notify me, repeatedly, of the photos that don't qualify or have no exif

You can't please everybody, my friend. I've learned that I'm much better off strictly enforcing the rules than letting questionable entries through. The rules are pretty clear.

And it absolutely matters if the camera is digital. You're entering photo challenges on a site called Digital Photography Review.

Only 3 photos have been submitted so far. Already had to DQ two of them for no exif data. I'm on the fence about the only remaining image, as I know it was shot with a film camera. I really hate having to DQ people, but you know how it goes. On a technical challenge, no exif = DQ. Have to keep it fair or the complaints start filling up my inbox.

Although I was thinking to shoot with my Rollei 6006 in the beginning, i have shot the pic with my NEX-5N, Minollta 50mm f/2.8 Macro and the LA EA1 adapter

Fair enough. I assumed from your earlier posts that you used a film camera, meaning the exif data would've had to have been added afterwards.

Tell me this... how does a film photo contain exif data? It would have to have been entered by the user, using an exif assigning program of some sort, correct?
