Take a non human non animal macro shot which exudes elegance in curves. No liquor glasses nor flower shots as well please. Put a Border and Title on the photograph. Please also watermark the capture date (correct to the month). Good Luck !

Processing rules:

No composites.
Cropping is OK, but do not cut out / replace the background.
Filters are allowed as long as the other rules are respected

Capture date rules:

No restrictions.

Only entrants who have won at least one photo challenge in Dpreview.com can enter.
I might consider allowing entries from beginner participants if their entry is on par with the rest of the field.
The total entry limit is now set at 35, might slightly increase the limit if this challenge is well received.
Do not submit shots used in previously completed DPReview.com challenges.
No political statements please, any photos with the slightest hint of controversial statement or message will be removed without any notice.
Shots I find offensive might be removed.
Make sure the entries look good and tasteful (at least you must find your own shot tasteful).
Complaints might not be entertained after the voting has started.

There is one shot of a flower being complained, and I have just addressed it. No more complaints on flower shots.

1) I am a beginner to the challenges and, given the statement that "I might consider allowing entries from beginner participants if their entry is on par with the rest of the field", I go ahead and submit to these challenges, hoping that the host will find it on par with the rest of the shots.

2) Regarding borders and date, I don't know either why the host likes them. But, hey, it is his rules, and I am OK with that. I find placing borders in LR/PS a bit time consuming so instead I usually spend 10 seconds or less doing that in Picasa. It is not the most elegant border but it does serve the purpose, IMHO. So no complaints there.

3) Finally, I am curious. When the host states something in the challenge description but does not include it explicitly under the rules, how should that be treated? For example, in this case, the host has stated non-animal, non-flower in the description, and yet there are are a couple of animal/flower shots. Are they violating the rules, or not?

One of the reasons the state of the challenges is so healthy and that they are so successful is the autonomy the hosts have in their own challenges. I don't like to harass a host who puts out the effort to run a good challenge. Re the borders and so on, I suspect he knows what he is doing. It certainly seems to be working. It is not like he is setting the rules for all challenges. His are just a few among many. I just don't understand what the big deal is.

Quit it with this " (Full Colour Only + Border, Title, Date)" and "Only entrants who have won at least one photo challenge in Dpreview.com can enter." A lot of these shots are sub par or just plain boring. I'd like to see which challenges these entrants have won, especially the soap dispenser photo, the handle on the coffee cup, salt and pepper shaker, the guitar, the button and the ceramic giraffes. Conanfuji, I know you probably thought you were going to see some award winning photos by only letting winners of previous challenges enter, but it seems luck has more to do with winning then talent on this website. Regards...

I actually like the salt and pepper dispenser... I bought a set before. From the top it looks like yin n yang.
Ironically I had to dq your (nice) shot for it having no border, title n date. I hope you'll resubmit.

As for your other opinions, the photographers of the soap dispenser, salt n pepper shaker, guitar, giraffes have all won one or more challenge before. I have disqualified the button and coffee cup handle for lack of merit from a non-winner.

Finally a host DQ'ing photos that don't meet the criteria of the challenge. I entered a previous challenge that was a "behind the scenes" theme, wanting to show the placement of the lighting used in the shot. Out of the 150 entries I'd say nine (9) of the photos met the criteria, mine being one of them. Most entries had the light as their main subject, which is not what the host was asking for, no shots were dq"d and I believe I placed 50th. Maybe I shouldn't have won but I think I deserved at least top ten for meeting the challenges criteria. I believe I will make some changes and enter again. I haven't won any challenges but maybe you will let my entry join the likes of these winners. I apologize for sounding rude in my previous comment, just getting out some frustration nothing personal. Regards...

A large number of images submitted here are mistaken (I have stronger words in mind ;->): these are photos of other artists' skills and imagination, not of the person who pressed the button. In general if one can recognize a human-made object, it is not a macro in a strict sense.

No definition of 'macro' that I've ever read is related to whether the subject is human-made or not. Rather, the clasical definition of a macro shot is one in which the size of the subject image on the film is equal to or larger than that of the subject in real life. Quite a bit of latitude is taken by manufacturers here, with some so-called 'macro' lenses being capable of only 1:3 or 1:4 reproduction, but the basic concept of an image that is large relative to real life is the key to the definition.

Many of the submissions here do not conform to this definition.

A point made in my earlier message is that this precise definition is breached these days even by the best known manufacturers in describing lenses as 'macro', so a degree of tolerance is appropriate. Maybe 'close-up' would be somewhat better, but that would just raise another round of discussion. I think we know what the host means, in essence.
The original point of contention here was whether or not a 'macro' shot can or cannot include man-made objects. It certainly can.
