In India, pure vegetarians do not consider Mushrooms as VEGETARIAN FOOD.

Is that because they are not a 'true' vegetable? I know they have quite different internal structures, methods of reproduction, growth etc. And when I cook them in soup they remain in EXACTLY the same form, even after four hours, they just don't break down the way vegetables do! Interesting phenomenon! :-)

That is an intriguing thought! Does that mean that carrots, parsnips, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, and peanuts are also considered not acceptable foods for vegetarians?

No. There are some vegetarians who adhere to a more strict regiment, I believe in India, the followers of Mahavira is an example. Their standard of care, you can say, is "class-leading" with all due respects..
