Chromatic Contrast

As an artist, the easiest way to convey contrast is to use color. In color theory we describe two colors that have absolute chromatic contrast as complementary because when used with additive or subtractive light mixing, they complete the color spectrum and produce an achromatic result. You may know these simply as opposite colors. Green, for example, is often said to be the opposite of red. Your challenge is to produce a photography that uses very strong complementary colors. Aside from that requirement, the photograph must simply be aesthetically pleasing. Tips: Computers use an additive light system based on Red, Blue and Green light. Opposites go like this: Red -> Cyan Blue -> Yellow Green - Magenta Violet is just a Bluish Magenta. Orange is just Yellowish Red. You may also use a more traditional set of colors: Blue -> Orange Red -> Green Yellow -> Violet Do some research and experiment with color!

Processing rules:

Processing is okay but these need to look like photographs still. Making your Blue cup Red so it contrasts with the Green table is fine. Slopping on some colorful shade to your whole image so it looks surreal ... not so much.
I will be very lenient with this rule but try to make your photos look like they could have actually existed without any extensive Photoshop work.

- Entries must have titles or be disqualified.
- I would like to see at least one-sentence descriptions for the photos, especially if you go over your processes. Not absolutely required but preferred.

Sorry to the 2 people who couldn't submit/resubmit because of disqualifications; I had to be away from a computer this weekend so I couldn't update things until just now.

Good luck to all the entrants, this appears to be an interesting collections of photos representing various themes. A large chunk of them are questionable in their use of colors that are considered "complementary" but I'll let the voters decide.

Otherwise I don't see the reasons for your headaches or the participants wish to be seen.

It's an online community. More than anything it's about getting your work seen; the winner usually shows up on the main page of this site (which is arguably the most popular photography website online) and since you're allowed to link to your personal gallery in your signature and profile, it's free advertising.

A lot of entries don't have titles because people didn't read the additional rules. I'm not just going to automatically DQ these because it takes forever and I'm tired of doing it.

I give up. If you can't enter this contest because it's full or you don't want to see it fill up with entries that don't follow the rules, complain! I will gladly disqualify rule breakers if someone complains.

Aside from that, let your votes decide. Hopefully people who can't read a simple rule and give their photos remotely meaningful titles really bugs you too! I vote 0.5 every time, no title = not serious about the challenge in my opinion - I don't care how good your work is!

I can't actually vote on anything in a challenge I host; that's just my view on images with out-of-camera titles.

What I'm saying is I'm tired of disappointing myself thinking that people are going to title their images. They don't want to and I can't make them; if I disqualify half the entries it becomes a pretty small challenge ...

I already couldn't edit the rules before I realized how bad people are about this. Should I stick to it or just give up on titles and not do that rule for future challenges?

No, don't give up on insisting on titles. If more hosts insisted on titles, then fewer entrants would be lazy and leave the IMG numbers there. Many entrants have put a lot of work into their entries, photoshopping, cropping, retouching etc... then they title them with IMG 4735 or DSMG 8269! It just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm definitely up for you enforcing the rules, I just figure it's a part of the competition and polite and especially in this case as I just had my with-title-entry bumped because the challenge filled up during mid-submission with... a submission that has no title! Seriously considering a complaint, but many thanks to you for creating the challenge.

It's up to you. What I wouldn't do is sticking to it and not enforcing it afterwards. I understand that it's a lot of work for you and frustrating.

The point when it turns to be awkward if the winner entry doesn't have a title.

In the slideshow view the title is not shown permanently. So without intervention (even it's a small intervention) the voters don't even see if there is a title or not.

I find this rule straightforward but there are far more worse things than entries without an adequate title.

some more thoughts:
- a challenge with 50 entries is not a bad thing either. An entrant can resubmit his photo too. Otherwise he learns the lesson for the next time.
- you don't have so much rules that it would take too much time to read all of them.
