The First and Second place finishers were disqualified due to not observing the rules of the challenge, specifically the capture date.
My congratulations to Stefano M for his winning image.

Well done. Congrats to Sefano!

It was however not only "not observing the rules". The entrants (or the single entrant as RuthC pointed out) deliberately changed the capture date in order to able to enter. That is deliberate cheating.

First and second place-getters seem to be the same person! As well as fudging the capture dates in order to enter this challenge. :-(

what's the ruling as to whether insects are considered 'animals' for this one?

Insects are not allowed. Insect habitat or nest, such as honeycomb pattern of a bee hive would be on the edge of acceptable. The voters, in this case, will make the final decision.
