Creative Filters: Macro

Close-up shots taken with the aid of a macro filter or diopter. You are free to enter shots of any kind of subject. You MUST have used a macro filter or diopter to achieve your result. These are special kinds of filters that typically screw onto the end of a primary lens. They are often described as being +3, +5, +10, etc, as a measure of their strength. Photographs taken with multi-element macro filters (eg: Marumi 200, Raynox 150) are fully eligible. You CANNOT have used a dedicated macro lens to achieve your shot. Any entries taken with dedicated macro lenses will be disqualified.

Processing rules:

A reasonable amount of post-processing is allowed, but the most important element of your photograph should be the result you achieved with your filter.

Hmm. Good question. I have not used a reversed lens before, but my understanding is that the method relies on reversing the PRIMARY lens, rather than sticking a reversed secondary lens in front of a primary lens.

I do not think it is in the spirit of this challenge to allow such a method.

This challenge (in fact, the whole series of "Creative Filters" challenges) aims to allow photographers to display the results they have achieved using relatively simple glass attachments to the fronts of their lenses. It is true that in this case I am allowing multi-element lens attachments (eg: the Marumi and Raynox models), but at some point a line must be drawn in the sand, and on that basis I will not allow shots made with reversed lenses.

Are you allowing a reversed lens?? This is where you screw on (or tape) a second lens backwards to the end of the lens attached to your camera body.

It is true that in a strictly technical sense there is no such thing as a "macro filter". However, the term "macro filter" is commonly used to describe a close-up lens attachment. To quote wikipedia:

"In photography, a close-up filter, close-up lens or macro filter is a simple secondary lens used to enable macro photography without requiring a specialised primary lens."

Extension tubes are not eligible.

Extension tubes are not lenses, dedicated or otherwise. They fit between the body and any "non-macro" lens. I use extension tubes for all my macro work - why would these not be acceptable? Yours screw on the front, mine screw on the back ......
Just interested, that's all.

No, he does not mean macro tubes, but close up lenses you screw onto the front of the camera lens.

There are no macro "filters" -- those are lenses.
Just because you screw it on your lens doesn't make it a filter...
