I was kind of confused as I went through these, like many DPR challenges these days there are only a hand full of images that (1) are not snapshots and (2) actually are of what the challenge is about. Makes you wonder.

This contest has maybe 20 side lit shots in it and 102 that are not. Does the moderator just leave it up to the voting or would it make more sense to DQ those what are not within the theme?

I agree that most of these portraits do not really seem to keep with the rules and I will vote accordingly. They say that only half the face is lit using available light, not a profile shot and not one where we can see the whole face lit.

I agree with you but do feel the need to point out that the rules allowed Studio as well as available lighting.

was that a female portrait challenge or side lit female portrait? Almost half of these pics do not have the light from side.

And I didn't know that the definition of FEMALE includes the children ??!!! Of course if you fill up goverment docs for child , you say female. But here It does not mean baby or child. Is that right saleem?

I took it as inclusive of children or else I would have expected the description to say "Women." The definition of female certainly does include children... woman/women would be a term to describe an adult female.

I agree many of the pictures do not emphasize a side lit portrait.

Sex is not determined by age. I was a female when I was born and I'm still a female at the age of 61. If the host had wanted an age range it whould have been stated in the rules. ( IMO even the word "women" would have been too arbitrary. At what age does a female become a woman?)

Although I've only been shooting for four months, I think "side lit" means that the source of the light comes from the side. I don't think it means taking a photo of just one half of the face. However, I'm new to photography and have a lot to learn about lighting. I'd be very interested in other peoples' interpretation of "side lit" including the host's intention.
