Elizabeth,
Click 'slide show', then 'play'. Your keyboard number keys will vote in full steps and you can use the up and down arrow keys to add or subtract half steps. The right and left arrow keys will advance to the next photo or go back to the previous one.
As far as how to score the entries - DPR used to have a page of voting tips - but I've no idea how to find it. You might ask on the challenges forum.
