Peace of Mind - as in relaxed and detached from the problems of the world around us. Per series' theme, let the image speak: *NO TITLES OR DESCRIPTIONS* (put a dash "-" in place of title). Your photo must be able to invoke the sense of peacefulness in our minds - without written explanations. No classical portraits (read description here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portrait). If a face is visible within the scope of the person's environment, it's ok). This time it's B&W only (no toning or tinting). -- Voters: Please read host's comment at the bottom of the challenge.

Since I did not explicitly state in the rules "No embedded copyright notices in the photographs", I do not feel it would be appropriate for me to disqualify an image at this stage. I will keep that in mind, however, for future challenges. Thanks for bringing it up.

You may be right. I'll give it a try once. We've asked for changes to the voting system so many times, but I am beginning to believe that DPR may like the controversy. If so, it is misguided. I definitely see fewer good entries than in the past. Folks just don't want to bother with a system that is this badly broken.

I'm not so sure it's the system as much as the people entering. It's the same human flaws like greed, that screw up everything, some will always find a way.

Maybe if you could come up with a formula that would add a higher weight for more votes and a much lower weight if a photo only had a couple 5's.

Of course this would only work if everybody voted, which is part of the problem.

You will not change human nature, so there is no point in wondering about it. Voting system can be changed, though, to account for the human nature.

Good intentions but.... what I see appears that the biggest sandbaggers also have friends or family that log in and vote their photo a 5 star even though it's poor quality or off-topic. This equation will look like - (0 votes from honest voters) + ( a # of 5 votes from friends) divided by (# of 5 votes) = 5 Star rating. The bottom feeder WINS!

Your concept/system defeats a measure of checks & balances the low to high voting system has to minimize the "Sandbag Effect" and encourages a - You kiss my a-s, I'll kiss yours' - that I've seen on other sites. This might not be perfect, but it's better than the alternative. Sandbaggers will always find a way.

Folks, I propose a little twist in voting - when you look at the entries and see one you are not interested in, just skip it and go to the next one. Do not vote it down. If you see an entry you consider interesting, please vote from 3 to 5 stars. If the results are encouraging, perhaps it might help DPR change the voting system to one that would de-emphasize negative voting and sandbagging.

Not voting is almost the same as voting low. The algorithm includes the number of votes as well as the rating. So, someone who gets only one vote, even if that vote is a 5, they could still end up very low in the ranking.

As long as you have a number system and allow anyone to vote, the voting will always have trouble.
