Make It Square
Challenge has finished

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The aesthetic of the square format in photography is regularly debated, although important photographers like Richard Avedon, Robert Doisneau, and Irving Penn have used it with great success. Those of us who learned photography using square format cameras (Rollei, Hasselblad) were taught to compose in the viewfinder either vertically or horizontally in the expectation that our prints and enlargements would be in the preferred rectangular format. Today, with few digital cameras offering a square format option, the problem is to compose in a rectangular frame with the expectation of cropping to a square.
