Fujifilm

The Fujifilm stand was as usual very large and impressive, located directly opposite the Canon stand to the left of the main entrance. PMA was Fujifilm's first opportunity to show their new cameras based on their fourth generation SuperCCD HR and SR. The FinePix F410 has a three megapixel SuperCCD HR sensor producing a six megapixel image. The FinePix F700 has the more interesting high dynamic range SuperCCD SR sensor, still with three megapixels (six million photodiodes) producing a six megapixel image. Quietly announced was the impressive (but as yet unpriced) twenty megapixel medium format back, this is Fujifilm's largest SuperCCD sensor to date and produces a forty megapixel image (ie. huge).

Hewlett Packard

The HP stand featured the new three megapixel Photosmart 735, five megapixel Photosmart 935 and Photosmart 8886 docking station. Both new cameras are based around the Photosmart 812 design, the 735 aimed more at the entry level market (although still with a respectable feature set), the 935 has more advanced features including aperture and shutter priority. The 935 joins an ever growing range of five megapixel compact digital cameras based around the 1/1.8" type CCD sensor. Both cameras support HP Direct Print which allows printing directly from the camera to HP Photosmart and selected HP Deskjet / All-In-One printers.

Kodak

Kodak had a very similar archway style entrance to their stand as last year, however this time the large globe has gone to be replaced with a massive display screen. Kodak's contribution this year was a new three megapixel four times zoom, the DX6340 and the slim but slightly more interesting three megapixel three times zoom LS633. The LS633 was interesting because it was the first implementation of an OLED display on a consumer product (since the development of such displays were first announced three years ago).

OLED displays differ from LCDs in that they do not require a backlight, each pixel generates its own light. OLED displays also have a very wide viewing angle and very good brightness / color response. If you look at the two images in the middle below, the LS633 on the left and the DX6340 on the right you can clearly see that the LS633's display is far easier to see at an angle than the DX6340. The LS633's display also had deeper blacks and richer color. Very impressive.

Kodak also had the very interesting EasyShare Dock 6000, it allows you to print directly from your EasyShare digital camera by simply placing it on the top of the Dock. Images to be printed (or 'Shared' as is Kodak's new mantra) can be preselected in camera (DPOF). The 6000 is based on a 4x6" dye-sub printer engine, prints costing around $0.50 each (a media kit includes paper and ink).

Lexar

Lexar made no less than seven new announcements at PMA this year, add the JumpDrive Trio and Memory Stick Pro which were announced at CES and Lexar were beginning to challenge Sony for the most new products announced. Of more interest to our readers will be Lexar's expansion of Compact Flash capacity with the new 2 and 4 GB CF cards, the later of which requires a camera which supports FAT32 (latest Canon digital cameras, some D-SLR's). Lexar also proclaimed another jump in speed, to 40x (6 MB/sec). Other news included a new version of their Digital Photo Player, high speed SD cards, secure JumpDrive units and a USB2.0 multi-card reader.
