Olympus

Olympus surprised a few by announcing no new products at PMA. There was the normal display of the E-10 and E-20, the C-4040Z and C-3020Z, the C-40Z / D-40Z, C-700UZ and C-2100UZ as well as the rather extensive (and mostly confusing) array of low end cameras. Just as last year the Olympus stand was arranged into various sections with plenty of hands-on opportunity as well as knowledgeable staff ready to answer questions.

Panasonic

Panasonic this year came to the show with its new Lumix range of digital cameras. Everything from the four megapixel, three times optical zoom DMC-LC5 through to the two megapixel, two times optical zoom pocket sized DMC-F7. All of the Lumix digital cameras feature a "Leica" lens system (although closer inspection showed it to be remarkably similar to the OEM Canon unit used elsewhere) and SD/MMC storage. On the storage front Panasonic also had a prototype 512 MB SD card on display. The DMC-LC20, LC40 and LC5 will be available with an S (Silver body) or K (Black body) model number suffix.

Pentax

Pentax came to the show with two new products. The first is the Optio 230, a lightweight entry-level two megapixel digital camera with a three times optical zoom and swivelled LCD display (only along the horizontal axis). Although lightweight the camera felt solid and fairly well built. Pentax also arrived with a very unique product. The Digibino DB-100 is a combination of 7x zoom binoculars with a 0.8 megapixel (1024 x 768) CCD sensor, it can take a 1024 x 768 or 640 x 480 image of the image viewed through the binocular eyepieces (it actually uses a third lens system in the center of the unit). The Digibino was still in prototype form at the show but we got to take a shot or two and it was operational.

Printroom.com

Printroom (the photo sharing / photo finishing company) had a small space on the Lexar stand where they were demonstrating their new DVD Photoshow product. DVD Photoshow allows professional photographers (or keen amateurs) to produce DVD slideshows which can be played on any DVD player. You start by uploading images to the Printroom website, creating a new DVD Photoshow and then arranging the uploaded images into up to five 'chapters' (a maximum of 500 images can be stored on each DVD). You then apply titles, credits and select accompaniment music. DVD Photoshow costs $49.95 for up to 150 images, $59.95 for up to 300 images and $69.96 for up to 500 images. The DVD is created and delivered direct from Printroom.
