SanDisk

SanDisk brought their new higher speed 'Ultra' Compact Flash cards to Photokina along with three new products. The first is a four-in-one PC Card adapter which supports Compact Flash, SD / MMC, Memory Stick and SmartMedia. Also on show was the new FireWire ImageMate Compact Flash reader and a USB 2.0 six in one card reader.

Sigma

Just before the show Sigma announced pricing for the SD9 digital SLR, $1800 list in the US (although we expect to see it lower). Sigma / Foveon made an even bigger splash at the show by allowing attending journalists to borrow and SD9 for a few hours and publish their own test shots. On the first day we borrowed the SD9 the weather in Cologne wasn't good and although the images published generated a lot of interest they weren't in my opinion representative of the image quality possible from the X3 sensor. Two days later things improved and I got my hands on the SD9 for the second time, these samples (available here) are considerably better (thanks to some 'normal light') and have generated a huge reaction on our forums and from other visitors to the site.

The stand was busy from the first day, probably thanks in no short measure to the publicity gained from images posted on our site and others. Everyone wanted to get their hands on the camera and everyone was interested to see the studio shoot demo arranged on one corner of the stand, images were processed and printed to show the true potential of the SD9. Sigma also introduced three new big zoom lenses at the show, one of which is pictured here, you can get more information on the lenses from the site links section below.

Sinar

Sinar came to the show with their new Sinarback 54 medium format back, this is the first commercially available implementation of Kodak's KAF-22000CE 22 megapixel 50 x 38.8 mm CCD sensor. This sensor is large enough that when used in a medium format back it doesn't affect focal lengths too greatly (unlike other MF backs which use 36 x 24 mm sensors). Also at the show Sinar demonstrated their new 'Sinar m' digital medium format camera, designed to be used with their MF backs the camera can support various lens mounts (35mm and MF) including Nikon F, Contax, Mamiya, Digiflex etc.

Sony

Sony brought no less than five new products to Photokina. The two ultra-compact Cybershot 'U' digital cameras, the 1.2 megapixel DSC-U10 and the 2.0 megapixel DSC-U20 generated a huge amount of interest, it's not until you see these cameras in real life that you can appreciate how small they really are. Also new is the five megapixel five times optical zoom DSC-F717, a 'refresh' of the DSC-F707 with some new features and improvements. Two 'non-US' products on show are the DSC-F77 and DSC-FX77, four megapixel fixed times optical zoom lens digital cameras which are almost identical apart from the FX's built-in Bluetooth communications ability.
