Nikon Coolpix 950 vs. Canon Pro 70: Page FourPage 1 | Page 2 | Page 3 | Page 4 | Page 5 | Page 6 Colour fringing Colour fringing was something I brought up in the Coolpix 950 review, and as yet we have note nailed down the true cause of this strange magenta glow on the edges of very high contrast parts of images, the Pro 70 does not exhibit any such characteristics.
White balance (automatic) To see which camera could handle white balance correctly I took a very simple shot of a mostly white subject next to an incandescent lamp.
As you can see neither camera did a perfect job, the Coolpix 950 faired better than the Pro 70 but had a slight yellowish blue cast, the Pro 70 left the image looking very warm. One interesting thing that this shot brought out (which I'd not noticed previously) was the amount of blue/yellow noise on 950 shots in this level of light.
In the example below the Pro 70 made a much better job of white balance and image sharpness (probably a result of more accurate focusing).
Here's a magnification of detail from both cameras:
Coolpix 950 Moire Effect I took this shot of a photograph from a National Geographic 100 years book with both cameras, much to my surprise the Coolpix 950 image showed some pretty bad moire effect from the halftone used by the magazine.
On a sub-note (the original reason for taking the shot) the Pro70's rendition of colour and balance is almost identical to the original image:
