There are plenty of tutorials and software available for creation of tonemapped HDR images, but this focus is on doing entirely in Free/Open Source software like LuminanceHDR.
The actual creation of an HDR image is fairly straightforward, but the tonemapping of the image to get the luminance values into a range that can be displayed on a monitor is a different story. There are many different operators, and they all have strengths/weaknesses/quirks that it helps to know a little about ahead of time.
This walk through looks at the creation of an HDRi from multiple exposure low dynamic range images, and how each of the available tonemapping operators affect the image:
