Photography: A very personal vision -- Simplicity
Today we talk about simplicity as a whole and simplicity in photography in particular. But let us first note a few things. In fact there is no rule for photography. At least they are not the one like laws of physics which is valid everywhere, be it in Moscow or New York or on the Moon. Or they are not something like civil code breach of which may cause you severe punishment. Rules of photography are something else, a knowledge of which give you an idea how to make better photo and when and how to break them to get a better result. But remember, knowledge of any rule does not necessarily mean their proper application. Indeed, only those who have something to add very personal succeed in life. We all know how to write, but only a few become Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Tagore or Pushkin. Thousands kick the ball or hit it hard, but a few become Pele or Tendulkar. So, even you know the rules like your five fingers, be creative, and try to do something very special not to vanish in the crowd.
One question you may ask, what hell, if the knowledge of photography rules does not automatically make you a good photographer, and they are not strict, you need to learn them. In my early days I too thought like that. But once my friend told, if you take the photos of your kids, then why not take it thoughtfully, so that you can show it anyone without any hesitance. He meant, if we spend time doing photography, then why not do it properly, as it will give you the pleasure of being somewhere and watching something, but keeping it in a creative way. So even if you are not planning to be a passionate photographer, the knowledge will still bring you much pleasure. You will not only be able to take photos, but also judge others work. I think, everyone feels proud, when he or she can do it correctly. So let us begin our journey.
We can now come back to simplicity. I think it is one of the greatest things to be simple in life. Express simply is not that easy task. Indeed, to express your ideas simply needs a very good knowledge of the problem in hand. It is the same in photography. Most people prone to put, as much as possible, objects in the frame. For example, while taking a rose, they definitely put a portion of sky, grassy ground and the nearby building in the frame. Or say, you are in Paris. You will definitely take a shot of your friend with his head at the bottom like a fallen leaf and Eifel Tower stretching all along the frame. There is nothing wrong in your willing to show your friend and Eifel Tower, but in this case things do not work. So we need to keep the things simple. But how can we do that? First we need to decide what we are going to shoot, I mean, we have to find out the principal object. Like a hero in a movie or novel, we have to find out the main object and shoot in such a way that the other objects will be complementary to it. They will help him look better, in no way take out the zeal from him. So cut out all the elements those could distract our view. If we plan to show the beauty of a rose, let it be. If we need the sky, let it be the good back ground. A beautiful cloudy sky can easily steal the charm of the rose. If we want to take a picture of a kid, don’t let him lost in the toys. Sure, it will tell people how many toys the kid has, but then, they will watch the toys, not the kid. So we have to first set the priority, what we really want to show. So let us not make the things complicate putting a lot of unnecessary details. It is easy to say, but really hard to do. Specially, when you want to take outdoor photos, there will always be something that makes the life hell. You simply can’t get rid of them, but you can move around and see from which point it will have a minimum effect on your photo. Finally, I want to show you some photos those are very simple.
