Consumer SLR Camera Roundup (2013)
Canon EOS Rebel T5i/700D
18MP APS-C Hybrid CMOS sensor | 5 fps continuous shooting | Hybrid AF + traditional 9-point AF
What we like:
- Excellent touchscreen
- Articulating LCD
- Good low-light performance
What we don't like:
- Hybrid AF isn't quite fast enough
- Somewhat limited dynamic range
- Slightly higher noise
Though it's little changed over its predecessor, the Canon Rebel T5i/700D is still a strong camera design, with an 18MP sensor, 5 fps continuous shooting, and an articulating touchscreen LCD. Despite sitting above the SL1/100D it doesn't have quite such an advanced live view AF system so it doesn't approach the speed of modern mirrorless cameras. Its kit lens is a good quality 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 STM optic that focuses quickly and quietly, good for live view and movie use.
"Easy to recommend to anyone wanting a capable digital SLR at a reasonable price"
Image quality is very good in bright light, with generally accurate exposure and white balance. As with most Canon SLRs, dynamic range isn't quite up to the standard of its peers, though you'll not see this in the JPEGs. Noise levels are a fraction higher than its predecessor, and higher than the newer 70D, but still quite good up to ISO 6400, making even higher ISOs quite usable.
The Canon T5i's articulating touchscreen LCD is very versatile for shooting from a wide variety of odd angles, and its touchscreen can be used for AF point selection as well as menu navigation. Its grip is large enough for most hand sizes, and its overall width is good for holding the camera with both hands. Controls are placed well enough for easy access without accidental activation.
While its stand-out feature should be its autofocus, the T5i's live view Hybrid AF left much to be desired in the speed department, still too slow to compete with most mirrorless models.
Still, its traditional phase-detect autofocus is fast and accurate, and the T5i's touchscreen is a surprisingly convenient way to adjust many settings in a hurry; everything else is quite good and easy to recommend to anyone wanting a capable digital SLR at a reasonable price.
