Breakthrough Photography claims X3 CPL is world's sharpest circular polarizer
Breakthrough Photography, a San Francisco-based startup, is seeking funding for what it claims is the 'world's sharpest and most color neutral circular polarizer,' the X3 CPL. This polarizer is constructed with Schott B270 optical glass from Germany, MRC16 and nanotec coatings, a weather-sealed brass Traction Frame, and new American-made CrystalVision CPL film.
The X3 CPL's Traction Frame is based on Breakthrough's X3 ND model, featuring CNC machined brass with an electroplated matte black finish. The nano coating repels water and debris while the MRC16 coating, of which there are 8 layers per side, aims to eliminate reflections. Breakthrough cites its CrystalVision CPL film as 'the core of the X3 CPL,' and believes it to give the best color neutral performance among competing products. Says the maker, its film 'achieves a decline in IR transmission across the visible spectrum and is very well controlled throughout the IR range.'
The company is raising funds on Kickstarter, where it is offering the X3 CPL in 12 different sizes: 39mm, 46mm, 49mm, 52mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm, 95mm and 105mm. Certain sizes and rates have been sold out, but remaining options are priced from $89 to $159 USD. Shipping to backers worldwide is estimated to start in December of this year.
