A Portrait of Invention: David Friedman's 'Inventor' Series

'Christie's was already shooting their catalogs digitally by the time I got there in 1997. As I recall we shot with Dicomed Bigshot digital backs and the Leaf DCB II, both usually on Sinar 4x5 cameras. These were grayscale backs requiring a motorized color wheel in front of the lens which would rotate to take three images through a red, green, and blue filter. Then the camera's companion software composited the color image from three grayscale images.

In 2000 I left to accept a position as the company photographer for Polo Ralph Lauren. I worked there until 2007 when I quit in order to freelance full time.'
