Exposing sharks in a positive light
How did you get started photographing sharks?
I have always been fascinated with sharks, ever since I can remember, and my favorite shark species has always been the white shark (Carcharodon carcharias). I have always wanted to see a white shark in the wild, so it was one of those 'bucket list' items that I told myself I would do some day.
In 2006, my girlfriend left me, so I was sort of singing the blues about that whole situation and decided that I needed a getaway to get my life back on track. I had some money stored up for an engagement ring, so I decided to make the dream of seeing a great white a reality by going on a white shark diving trip to Mexico's Isla de Guadalupe. I bought a small Sony point-and-shoot and a housing, so that I could document what I assumed would be a 'once in a lifetime' experience. However, after that first trip I was hooked and have since returned to Guadalupe every fall (with the exception of 2009). I also began diving with and photographing other species of sharks after that first trip, as well.
