Uploading your avatar

Step 1: Make sure you are logged in

Check the blue user widget on the right hand sidebar. If it shows your name, then you're good to go. If it shows an e-mail and password field, fill that in first and click 'Login.'

Step 2: Go to your Profile Settings page

Prepare an image that you want to be your avatar picture. We will take any square JPEG file, preferably at least 80x80 pixels. When you are ready, click the 'Choose File' button and pick the image you prepared earlier. The browser will upload the file and we will process it. When we are done processing it, the avatar image will be updated to the image you just uploaded.

Step 3: Pick the image you like

If you are adventurous, you can get to the page from your User profile page and click on 'Change picture' link below your current avatar. It is at http://www.dpreview.com/members/settings/profile.

Step 4: Confirm the changes are made

If you like the look of your new avatar, click the 'Save changes' button at the end of the page. This will save any other update on the page as well. Alternative you can click 'No' and repeat the uploading process with a different image.

After avatar change

Any questions?

Question 1: What happens to Gravatar?

If you have not set up an avatar with us and have a Gravatar account, we will show your Gravatar.

Question 2: What if I want to remove my avatar on dpreview?

Go to your Profile Settings page (Step 2), click the 'Remove your current avatar' link. If you have a Gravatar account, you will also need to remove the avatar associated with your log in e-mail address with us. Otherwise, we will display that avatar.

Any more questions?

If you have more questions, please send us a feedback.

Why can we not load profile picture/from "my Gallery"?
It can be so much easy. Why do you have to go via Avatar or any other thing?
There isn't anything but pain in avatar.

Even more confusing now, if I delete the "BLANK" Avatar then browse for new image it works but its the wrong image, it defaults to the avatar seen on left of this message, this is the avatar thats associated with my email, I cannot change it.

Carl, we've deployed a fix earlier today regarding Internet Explorer version 8 or earlier. This has been problematic for the past few days. Let me know via Feedback if this does not help you.

No good - all I get is a red X with the word Gravatar written next to it. Then when I save it and then post a message it goes to the red X with my name as you see now. The file is 80x80, but I've tried other sizes with no success. Advice?

IE uploading should now fixed. Opera should upload too, but on some configuration, the uploaded image is not downloaded automatically. We're still working on it.

Thanks!

Not that we are owed an explanation, but why did you decide to host your own avatars?

we got daily complaints about gravatar (not working, being over-complicated, requiring another log-in) so we put 'host our own avatars' on the long list of minor fixes. It took 2 years to find its way to the top of that list ;)

For me, it is also not uploading the picture.

This switch from Gravatar comes just in time for me, since I wasted an hour or so yesterday trying to load an avatar image using Gravatar. The problem was their cropping function, which didn't work no matter how many times I tried.

The image I was attempting to crop was taller than it was wide. Though the instructions at Gravatar said that the cropping frame could be moved anywhere on the image, I could only get it to move to one of three pre-set locations; ... top, bottom or middle. I finally gave up and kept my existing avatar. So, count me in the group that's glad you're no longer using Gravatar.

Candidly if you’re going to roll out a new feature (thank you) how about making sure it works before you make the freakin announcement. I’m wasting my time trying load up an image and I’m wondering what I’m doing wrong when in all actuality you’ve not done your due diligence.

Also there's something wrong with your handling of the avatar images. My alpha transparency is fine in some places and off in others. Like on this page, it looks fine next to the "Post new message ..." field but the aliasing on the alpha is terrible next to each comment.

If you're going to change things, why make it worse?

(I'm off to remove my avatar)

I don't think this feature works. I have tried several times to upload a small square JPEG but it just goes through the motions and then --- nothing. Does this really work or not?

I never could figure out why it wasn’t done this way in the first place (assuming it works). What was the purpose of Gravatar, what value do they actually add?

Jen Yates
By Jen Yates (Feb 29, 2012)

Must have been done for political reasons (Amazon vs Gravatar?).

No other reason to remove it completely, if they wanted to improve the experience for us then they'd allow gravatar as well as a new system, at least during a migration period.

They could have continued to support gravatar until you changed your avatar image here on DPR.

They didn't because they wanted gravatar gone.

Did you obtain permission from Gravatar to copy the avatars from their site to dpreview?

According to their Terms of Service you had no right to do so.

You know how some people have pictures by their names? That's an avatar. It can be a picture of yourself (like mine), an SO, a camera, a car, a flower, you name it.

Gravatar is a service where you upload the picture once, and it shows up on every site that uses their service.

Looking at the people who whine about not being able to get it to work, it also appears Gravatar is an intelligence test, keyed somewhere around minimal literacy.
