Building the Leica T (Typ 701)

The Leica T (Typ 701) is a brand new mirrorless camera system from the legendary German camera manufacturer. It features a 16MP APS-C CMOS sensor and uses Leica's new T-mount. Unlike other Leicas - which are loaded with buttons and dials - the 'T' has very few, instead relying on its 3.7" touchscreen display. While it has no built-in viewfinder, Leica offers an electronic one, with a built-in GPS no less.

Otherwise, the T's features aren't much different than those on other mirrorless cameras. It has a good selection of manual controls, a modern contrast detect AF system, twin dial operation, and 1080/30p video recording. You can learn more about the Leica T in our preview.

One thing that does make the 'T' stand out is how it's made. The 'T' isn't mass-produced at a factory in Asia, but by hand in a town in Germany. Check out our gallery above to watch an aluminum brick transform into a camera.
