Ways of choosing the perfect digital camera for kids.

What are some factors that go into picking a digital camera for a child? Besides your budget, the key factors to consider when buying a digital camera for a child is his or her knowledge of cameras and photography, and his or her interest level. There are so many options available in digital cameras that choosing one, especially for a child, can be confusing. As you search for the right digital camera for your child, use the following guidelines to help you.

If you are shopping for a young child, check out the selection of digital cameras made for kids offered by stores such as Disney and Fisher Price. These toys use bright colors, large buttons, and easy to use features to appeal to young children but they are also real cameras. Because kids tend to be round on toys, these cameras are made sturdy so they can withstand it. You may want to consider getting one of these for your child if he or she is young as these companies have experience in making things that kids enjoy.

Another feature of digital cameras to considered is the resolution which is measured in mega pixels. Photos will be blurry and not as high quality if the number of mega pixels is too low.

The price of cameras made for kids is kept low by limiting the number of mega pixels. You may want to consider something better if your child is old enough to notice the quality of his pictures. There are good quality digital cameras for reasonable prices available that will take better photos than a kids camera.

An SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera may be something to look into, even if you think it might be too advanced. If your child is ready to move beyond the cameras offered by toy companies, an SLR might actually be your best option.

SLR digital cameras offer several important advantages. These cameras are not only durable and easy to use, but they also allow you to take pictures in dim light without using a flash. The ease with which these cameras can be used make them ideal for kids. You would not buy an SLR camera for a toddler, but a responsible older child might find get more out of this than a regular digital camera.

Advances in technology mean you get more for your money when buying digital cameras, whether for yourself or a child. Basic model cameras and ones made for children can take rather good photos, thanks to these advances. This makes it a good time to buy digital cameras for kids, and if you remember the points we've discussed in this article you should be able to find a model that is just right for the young photographer in your life.

Hi gharathost.
Here you spoke about the small Disney and Fisher Price cameras. You then go on to speak about SLR's. What about the small Point and Shoot cameras? You can get a good P&S for less than $100 AUD, but still have 5x optical zoom and 10 or so megapixels. This might be an option for a child that has outgrown a Fisher Price camera, but is still too young for a full size P&S.
Just wondering what you think of these types of cameras for children?
