This week camera manufacturers released a number of new firmware versions. Today Sony released the previously announced Sony Alpha 7/7R update that promises faster start-up speeds, improved image quality and better AF support. There are also updates for a host of other Sony NEX cameras. Meanwhile, Nikon and Canon released updates to the D4 and EOS 6D, respectively.

Sony

Alpha 7

This utility updates the ILCE-7 camera firmware to version 1.02 and provides the following benefits:

  • Provides support for the SEL70200G lens
    • - Supports the "Fast Hybrid AF" function
    • - Supports future compatible E mount lenses
    • - Adds the "Focus hold button" function
  • Reduces start-up time
    • - The start-up time has been reduced in cases when the camera is switched on immediately after being switched off
  • Improves image quality
  • Provides support for additional PlayMemories Camera Apps™ and additional features for previously supported apps
    • - Supports the "Liveview Grading" and "Smooth Reflection" applications

Updates included with this release A:1.10 / B: 1.10:

  • Custom Setting f17: Assign Remote Fn Button has been added * .
  • Support for CompactFlash memory cards with capacities greater than 128 GB has been added.
  • When an XQD memory card and one of certain CompactFlash memory cards were inserted in the camera at the same time, "Err" was displayed in the top control panel. This issue has been resolved.
  • When AF-ON only was selected for Custom Setting a4 (AF activation) and the AF-ON button was pressed to initiate autofocus during viewfinder photography, focus remained locked even after the user took their finger off the button, and the shutter could be released at any time.  However, specifications have been modified so that the shutter cannot be released under the following conditions if the camera fails to focus.
    • Autofocus mode is set to AF-S (single-servo AF)
    • AF-area mode is set to Single-point AF
    • Custom Setting a2 (AF-S priority selection) is set to Focus

Canon 

EOS 6D 

Firmware changes:

  1. Fixes a phenomenon in which some images cannot be transferred to mobile devices running the EOS Remote app.
  2. Corrects an error in the German language Feature Guide.
  3. Corrects an error in the Korean language Feature Guide.

Firmware Version 1.1.4 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.1.3. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.1.4, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Please note:

After the firmware update has been performed the following setting will be reset to default. Menu > Custom Function> C.Fn II: Autofocus > AF Microadjustment> 1: All by same amount
