Harvard Scientists Create a Flat Lens With Perfect Optical Quality

semorg | Technology | Published Aug 27, 2012

In what seems to be the most significant optical breakthrough in modern times, three Harvard scientist have created the distortion free lens according to published results in the Journal of Nano Letter according the https://www.seas.harvard.edu/news-events/press-releases/flat-lens-offers-perfect-image

The 60nm flat lens applies a new approach to manipulating light. Common optical lenses take advantage of variations in speed of light when traveling through different optical medium using the resulting refraction to focus the image.  The researchers' new approach effectively bends the light at the surface of the lens and they are able to achieve optical performance nearing the diffraction limits of the light.

It's unclear how rapidly their technology will make it's way into your next Canon or Nikon lens, but I'm already expecting sever left focus issues on the Nikon D800.
