Photokina 2012: Nikon Stand Report

Nikon has a large, and very yellow presence at this year's show, and the Japanese manufacturer has a lot to show off. 2012 has been a busy year for Nikon, and crowds several people deep are lining up to get their hands on the latest releases, including the 12MP Coolpix P7700 - arguably Nikon's most interesting high-end Coolpix for years.

Let's not forget about the DSLRs though - the D3200 is drawing eager crowds, and for a lot of the attendees at this year's show, this will have been their first opportunity to get 'hands on' with the perennially backordered D800. The recently-announced D600, Nikon's 'budget' 24MP full-frame offering, has a stand all to itself.


Nikon's stand is very big and very yellow.	For some reason, there seems to be an unofficial competition between manufacturers, to see who can hang the most TV screens from the ceiling...

The Nikon D600 is generating the most interest on the Nikon stand - with a large crowd attracted by its high-end feature set and full-frame sensor...	...and competitive price-tag.

The Nikon J2 closely resembles the J1 but adds a higher resolution screen...	...and is now available in orange (finally!)

The Coolpix P7700 offers a brighter lens than its predecessor but retains the same zoom range.	That 28-200mm equivalent, F2-4 zoom makes the camera considerably more flexible than the P7100.

Were there a 800mm/f5.6 at all or still not in production?

Error in article... the small 'Coolpix S10' is actually named Coolpix S01.

From the guys that shot the video with D600, they had it back in the Winter, the camera has been ready to go for some time, Nikon only wanted to let the d800 sell for a while. Nice camera, big success so far.

I would have leapt in and ordered one D600... have been patiently waiting two years for the D300s replacement... but need something that can hit at least 8 frames per sec... at least the same res as my D7000 in DX.... focuses quickly with the 200-400mm f4...at sport under light....(to many misses with the D7000!!) Oh and glue that holds the rubber grips on....I hate it when the grips migrate just a smidge and act like a brake on the front control dial.

The Coolpix 7700 jumped out at me, until I saw that there is no viewfinder--rejected.

Yes, it's missing the plastic covered hole in the camera with 80% coverage, and no information display. Definite deal-breaker.

Many have information. All are unaffected by ambient sunlight. And most important for many, they don't let the camera shake more than the photographer's head does.

I think this is where building DX lenses will come back to haunt Nikon since folks that bought them will resist upgrading to FF and stick with their Cropped sensors. Rather than upgrade their Camera and Lenses.

Are there many DX lenses so good or expensive that your losses would prevent you upgrading? 17-55mm F2.8, perhaps, though there are probably enough D300S/D7000 owners who'd pay decent money for a second-hand one.

On the contrary - they will sell more bodies which can use the DX lenses and particularly those that can use both DX and FX. The D600 with a 10.5mp DX crop image and a 24mp FX will now be the natural upgrade from the D300/s and the other DX bodies as well as the D700 to a certain extent.

I never bought any single DX lens when I still used my D1H actively and never am I going to do so either. Basically I stopped use my Nikon gear about two years ago but since the old manual focus lenses I have for it is quite good I chose to keep that kit.
105 2.5 AiS, 35mm 1.4 Ai, Sigma 24mm 2.8 macro and also the AF 20-35mm 2.8 which is a non DX PJ-zoom of the good old school.
Just in case Nikon would come up with something good that makes sense like mirrorless aps-c camera bodies which I can use these lenses comfortably with. Until then, I'll continue use quality compacts like the Ricoh GR Digital MKI and also keep an eye on the battle of the mirrorless systems. Especially Fujifilm and Samsung.

Selling quality lenses nowadays could not be easier. With the various auction sites, DPR classifieds, etc, with quality glass you can nearly always get about what you paid for a lens. All of the big four camera makers offer APS-C and FF lenses which is great as there are lots of choices for all kinds of users.

That is not the question. Will the market accept it? I believe yes and D600's will be in shortsupply for some time and probably become one of the more popular models ever for Nikon.

Do you feel it would be worth it if D3x image quality was available for 2 grand?

(Judging from the image samples available by Nikon, things look pretty good. The only problems I see are probably technique or lens-associated.)

It just struck me that Nikon doesn't sell Nikon Yellow cameras. I mean, they even got red entry-level DSLRs, they surely could reinforce their branding with yellow ones =D

If the cameras were yellow they'd be invisible on the yellow stands.

Because I'm pretty sure Nikon decides on the colors thinking about the stands they will be using at Photokina.

Hey, as an old US Army Signal Corps photographer, I know Signal Corps orange on that Nikon J2 when I see it. Still won't buy it, but a gutsy move!
