Blast from the past: Photographing steam locomotives

Have you ever sustained major damage to your equipment out in the field? What happened?

'Last summer I was riding in a caboose at a slow speed when it came off the tracks and rolled over on its side. My camera was on a chair across from me, I watched it fall off the chair and roll across the floor before crashing into the wall. Somehow not a scratch on it.

I did make the dumb mistake once of changing lenses once while riding inside a steam locomotive’s cab, a fatal move. Coal dust, mixed with moisture, settled on the camera's sensor. It was never the same again and eventually died. A lesson very well learned the hard way.'
